My impression of the study tour to India

Yumiko

I tried to learn as many things as possible in those two weeks, since whatever I saw, heard, or experienced was something new and exciting.

My main objective in Kerala was to do research. I had a chance to visit other places in India too and I was deeply impressed by the people. When we called at an institute for street children, they sans songs to welcome us. Then we joined them in singing and dancing. Meanwhile, I forgot that they were chlren who had a bitter and sad past, I was amazed how cheerful and full of joy they were. I used to have a pity on them but my attitude totally changed.

During my research, I interviewed several women. Even though they could not speak English, they smiled to me and eventually they began to talk to me. I was very pleased with their friendliness. No matter how happy they appeared, they face the serious problem of poverty. They have to work very hard every day to make ends meet.

I was impressed that the women and children in the job training centers had a positive attitude in spite of their adversities. I see that this is due to the generous and warm support given by the sisiters and the staff of the centers.

In Mumbai, I saw the gap between the have and no-haves. I felt helpless asked myself what could I do for people living on the streets and the children without smiles. I was even thrown in despair by the thought that there is no solution to this situation.

A program of fair trade may be one solution to this problem. I decided to support the program by co-operating with women studying in job raining centers. By doing so, I would be able to unite with the people of India indirectly.

Through this study tour to India, I learned a lot by seeing the people with my own eyes, and being touched by them in my heart. I am rally grateful. Thank you, India.
